The Coveted Red Tricycle

Red Tricycle

For our Granddaughter’s third birthday we bought her The Coveted Red Tricycle.

She called to thank us leaving a voice mail saying, “Thank you sooooo much, this is the bike I’ve always wanted”.

I couldn’t help but contrast the desires a three year old has “always” had with the long cherished yearnings of a 54 year old?

And whether or not the tricycle will be such a wonderful source of joy in a month or two.

(read my blog titled "Matador" for a bit more on this theme)

"always" is such a relative term.

When my desire is delayed or thwarted, it is a rare lapse that has me thinking God is holding out on me any more... many times, these days, as I express my desire as succinctly as possible in a given moment, I am aware that God is inviting me to mine the vein of desire I'm feeling, and that hidden deeply in the wealth of the vein, is the purest root of desire. Were I to find resolution to the tension of desire without mining the vein, I'd miss the motherlode that drives the deepest desire.

May we never settle for less than the motherlode... and may we all experience the joy and thankfulness of getting the red trike we've always wanted from the One who gives all good gifts, and may our phone message be as joy filled.

I wonder, when we smile about a three year old "always" having wanted something, if maybe that's the same amusent God experiences when we talk of eternity?

I want a new 4x4 truck and my birthday was during BC. Red is good. When should I expect it, Craig? :)

Wait until that 3 year old is 11 and climbs clumsily onto a rustier version of its former self, musing, "I think I'll relive my childhood for a little bit." This coveted red tricycle is now a garden ornament. It's still a source of joy; a memory of sweet days.

Shannon... don't get me started. The empty nest is filled with memories and moments that will fuel us through this life... some laughter, some tears, most bring about a silent smile and thankful heart for the life and family God has given us. Great picture, thank you for sharing it! - Craig
